Learn about North Carolina auto insurance requirements including state minimums, why minimum coverage is not enough, and how Eastern NC drivers can save on auto insurance.

North Carolina Auto Insurance Requirements: What Drivers Need to Know in 2026

North Carolina requires every registered vehicle to carry auto insurance. Driving without insurance in NC is a criminal offense that can result in fines, license suspension, and even jail time. But beyond meeting the legal minimums, drivers in Eastern North Carolina need to understand what their auto insurance actually covers, where the gaps are, and how to make sure they are truly protected on the road.

At Harbor Insurance Agency in Chocowinity, we help drivers across Beaufort County and Eastern NC find the right auto coverage. Here is what you need to know about North Carolina auto insurance requirements and how to build a policy that actually protects you.

North Carolina law requires the following minimum liability coverage on every registered vehicle:

  • $30,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $60,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $25,000 property damage liability per accident

This is commonly written as 30/60/25. It means your insurance will pay up to $30,000 for injuries to one person, up to $60,000 total for all injuries in one accident, and up to $25,000 for damage to other people's property.

North Carolina also requires uninsured motorist (UM) coverage at the same limits as your liability coverage. This protects you if you are hit by a driver who has no insurance.

Why Minimum Coverage Is Not Enough

The state minimums were set years ago and have not kept up with the real costs of accidents. Consider this: the average cost of a serious car accident injury in North Carolina exceeds $100,000. A single trip to the emergency room can cost $10,000 to $30,000. If you cause an accident that seriously injures someone, your 30/60/25 minimum policy could be exhausted before the medical bills are even fully tallied.

When your insurance limits are exceeded, you are personally responsible for the remainder. That means the injured party can sue you for the difference. Your wages can be garnished, your bank accounts can be levied, and in some cases, your home and other assets can be at risk.

For most drivers, we recommend at least 100/300/100 liability limits. The cost difference between minimum coverage and much better coverage is often surprisingly small, sometimes only $20 to $40 more per month.

Understanding Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

North Carolina has one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers in the country. Despite the legal requirement, an estimated 1 in 7 NC drivers is uninsured. That means every time you drive on Highway 17, US 264, or any road in Eastern NC, there is a real chance the other drivers around you have no insurance.

Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage protects you when an uninsured driver causes an accident. Underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage kicks in when the at-fault driver has insurance but not enough to cover your damages. In North Carolina, you can select UIM coverage up to your liability limits.

We strongly recommend carrying UIM coverage at the same level as your liability limits. If you carry 100/300/100 liability, carry 100/300 UIM as well. This ensures you are protected whether the other driver has no insurance, minimal insurance, or inadequate insurance.

Collision and Comprehensive Coverage

Collision Coverage

Collision pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident, regardless of who is at fault. If you run off the road, hit a deer, or are rear-ended at a stoplight, collision coverage pays for the damage to your car minus your deductible.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive covers damage from events other than collisions: theft, vandalism, falling trees, hail, flooding, fire, and animal strikes. In Eastern NC, comprehensive coverage is particularly important because of our exposure to hurricanes, tropical storms, and severe thunderstorms. If a tree falls on your car during a storm or your vehicle floods in a parking lot, comprehensive coverage pays for the damage.

Medical Payments Coverage

Medical payments coverage, or MedPay, pays for medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault. MedPay is relatively inexpensive and can cover ambulance rides, emergency room visits, surgery, and follow-up care. We recommend at least $5,000 in MedPay, and $10,000 or more if you frequently carry passengers.

Rental Reimbursement

If your car is in the shop after an accident, rental reimbursement coverage pays for a rental car. In Eastern NC, where public transportation options are limited, being without a car can be a serious hardship. Rental reimbursement typically costs only $2 to $5 per month and provides $30 to $50 per day for a rental.

Factors That Affect Your NC Auto Insurance Rates

  • Driving record: Accidents, tickets, and DWIs significantly increase your rates. NC uses the Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP) to assign surcharges for violations.
  • Age and experience: Younger drivers and newly licensed drivers pay more. Rates typically decrease as you gain experience and maintain a clean record.
  • Credit score: NC allows carriers to use credit-based insurance scores as a rating factor. Maintaining good credit can lower your premiums.
  • Vehicle type: Newer, more expensive vehicles cost more to insure. Safety features and anti-theft devices can help lower rates.
  • Location: Where you live and park your car matters. Urban areas with more traffic and theft tend to have higher rates than rural areas.
  • Coverage levels and deductibles: Higher coverage limits cost more, but higher deductibles lower your premium.

  • Bundle your auto and home insurance for multi-policy discounts
  • Maintain a clean driving record
